The Boys Who Challenged Hitler: Knud Pedersen and the Churchill Club

Rarely do I binge read a book in one sitting (especially when it was delivered in the mail this morning) but I just couldn't put this one down. I always love WWII stories, but the idea that these children (Freshmen in HS) could be so brave and make such a difference- I was enthralled. Well worth your time to read!!!

" At the outset of World War II, Denmark did not resist German occupation. Deeply ashamed of his nation’s leaders, fifteen-year-old Knud Pedersen resolved with his brother and a handful of schoolmates to take action against the Nazis if the adults would not. Naming their secret club after the fiery British leader, the young patriots in the Churchill Club committed countless acts of sabotage, infuriating the Germans, who eventually had the boys tracked down and arrested. But their efforts were not in vain: the boys' exploits and eventual imprisonment helped spark a full-blown Danish resistance. Interweaving his own narrative with the recollections of Knud himself, here is Phil Hoose's inspiring story of these young war heroes." (Goodreads)

City of Bones (Mortal Instruments Series)

Oh how I loved this book!  It is like a cross between Harry Potter and Twilight and so very awesome!  I can't wait to finish the series and can't wait to see the movie!

City of Bones (Mortal Instruments, The)

"Don’t miss The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, soon to be a major motion picture in theaters August 2013.When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy? (From Amazon)

Ashfall by Mike Mullin

Seriously, if you live in Iowa, you MUST read this book.  For those in Anamosa, it should mean even more.  It is a a disaster/survival book.  Trust me- this is such a great book!

" Under the bubbling hot springs and geysers of Yellowstone National Park is a supervolcano. Most people don't know it's there. The caldera is so large that it can only be seen from a plane or satellite. It just could be overdue for an eruption, which would change the landscape and climate of our planet.

For Alex, being left alone for the weekend means having the freedom to play computer games and hang out with his friends without hassle from his mother. Then the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts, plunging his hometown into a nightmare of darkness, ash, and violence. Alex begins a harrowing trek to seach for his family and finds help in Darla, a travel partner he meets along the way. Together they must find the strength and skills to survive and outlast an epic disaster."

My Favorite Book of the Summer

My Favorite Book of the Summer is...

Front Cover

LOVED.THIS.BOOK!!!! Absolutely loved it. Rick Yancey is officially my new favorite writer! Normally aliens aren’t my thing, but this was very different from the old aliens I grew up with. This book is a kind of a mix of War of the Worlds (with Tom Cruise), Falling Skies, I am Number Four, and Ashfall. How can you lose? The writer is brilliant- I was cracking up at his imagery throughout the whole book. Brilliant. Now I am DYING for book 2!!! I hope he writes fast!
